IEEE talk: Impact of Social Networks on Wireless Systems by Dr. Seshadri Mohan - Wednesday 12. November 2014 at 14:00 - 16:00

Advanced socio-technical systems especially handheld and mobile devices are a part of the daily life for billions of people worldwide endowing a sense of every time connectedness that helps in realizing the ideology behind social computing applications and networking (such as, Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, YouTube, SecondLife, etc.), i.e., sharing whatever-whenever. With larger bandwidths (4G LTE, 5G capabilities), powerful processing capabilities, better displays, and user friendly and even haptic interfaces, mobile platforms have shown a promising future for social computing applications.
However, advances in web technologies (such as HTML5, AJAX, etc.) have led to the development of complex set of applications with rich user-interfaces that demands a nimble and robust architecture for social computing applications that is adaptive to the network constraints and bottleneck issues.

In this talk, we elaborate upon the challenges and provide a framework for incorporating cross-layer interaction between social network applications and wireless network capabilities. Specifically, we address the problems of user and community driven access networks and crowd driven multimedia content and also discuss the impacts of open networking and open user groups, and the role mobile multimedia plays in the enterprise. The talk also discusses the challenges in delivering social network content to mobile devices with the required QoS as well as possible future research directions including issues related to IP Multimedia Subsystems, the service infrastructure of 4G, 5G and, possibly, future wireless networks.

Cloud Management: Knowing is Half The Battle - seminar with Professor Raouf Boutaba, University of Waterloo, Canada - Monday 28. April 2014 at 10:00 - 11:00

The past few years have witnessed the rise of cloud computing, a paradigm that harnesses the massive resource capacity of data centers to support Internet services and applications in a scalable, flexible, reliable and cost-efficient manner. However, despite its success, recent literature has shown that effectively managing resources in production cloud environments remains to be a difficult challenge. A key reason behind this difficulty is that both resources and workloads found in production environments are heterogeneous. In particular, large cloud data centers often consist of machines with heterogeneous resource capacities and performance characteristics. At the same time, real cloud workloads show significant diversity in terms of priority, resource requirements, demand characteristics and performance objectives. Consequently, finding an effective resource management solution that leverages resource heterogeneity to support diverse application performance objectives becomes a difficult problem. The focus of this talk will be on understanding the research challenges introduced by resource and workload heterogeneity in production cloud environments. We will first provide a characterization of workload and resource heterogeneities found in production data centers, and highlight the key challenges introduced by them. We will then describe our recent work towards addressing some of these challenges.

Giv lyd Danmark
Wednesday 23. April 2014 at 9:30 - 16:30

Digital lyd, kom frit frem

Få et overblik over lydsituationen i Danmark.

Tuesday 1. April 2014 at 13:00 - 17:00

Exchange of Experiences - ERFA dag - on indoor mobile coverage (in Danish)
