May 29 – 30 2018 the Wireless World Research Forum (WWRF) with the support of the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) hosted the 5th 5G Huddle in Durban, South Africa.
The idea of the 5G Huddles is to bring together all stakeholder groups to identify the work that needs to be done in order to make the 5G vision a reality and to explore how the community can work together to deliver a sustainable 5G Eco-System. The preceding annual four high-level conferences have been held in London, Copenhagen, London and Ottawa.
The focus of the 5G Huddle 2018 was on ‘5G For All’ and on delivering a 5G infrastructure that meets the needs of all use cases and is fully inclusive including needs of developing countries.
This was the first time a 5G conference of this scale has taken place in the southern hemisphere. With less than 2 years to the first commercial deployment of 5G, the event attracted an audience of 200 participants and prominent speakers - including two ministers - from international organizations; from industry and academia – both nationally and internationally.
Professor Knud Erik Skouby, CMI, was invited to moderate a panel discussion ‘Preparing for the reality of 5G – how ready are regions around the world to start reaping the rewards of 5G?’
